They claim to have come a long way, baby. The giant leap is often credited to a new method of incision that is less invasive and easier to heal without scarring. This method is termed Micro grafting. %GOOGLEAD%

The technical details of Micro grafting go like this: permanent hair from the lower back and sides of the head, from around the traditional ?horseshoe? or ?monks? fringe? are taken and transplanted into the thinning and balding areas along the top and along the front of the head.

Supporters of this new method claim that, after a short resting period, these transplanted follicles will begin to grow hair and they will continue to grow hair as long as the person lives.

The physiological reason for this transplanted success is in the fact that all men have a horseshoe-shaped surround of hair growth, around the back and sides of the head. This area contains hair that is genetically programmed before birth to last the entire life.

The hairs with this genetic make-up in their roots are not sensitive nor do they fall victim to the male hormones called androgens. Androgens appear in the male scalp beginning at puberty. The hair that grows around the horseshoe is not sensitive and will not begin the process of ?miniaturization.? This term means that the normal, healthy hair begins to decrease in overall strand strength and width. The hair eventually decreases in coarseness and shrivels to a very fine, barely visible product of the follicle and root.

The history of hair transplants has gone through some rough phases. Today, there are as many as six different methods and techniques used in the surgical replacement of hair roots. Flap grafting, strip grafting, mini flap grafting, and square grafting are actually antique methods. They are not used much anymore. If a clinic suggests any of these methods, then you know that your hair surgeon is really out of the information loop, and you better look elsewhere for greater skill and surgical talent.

The old-fashioned methods listed above mean that a large strip of skin with hair roots intact is transplanted, which means removing the skin they will replace. This is a rather drastic approach that never produced any excellence. Even when the skin graft healed with only a little visible scarring, the hair growth itself was usually scattered and unpredictable.

The latest surgical method, titled Micro Grafting, pretty much describes itself and is now the state of the Art in Hair Transplants. It is a smaller and less noticeable method than Plug Grafting. A normal old-style plug graft will hold about twelve hair roots (of which half will be lost, it is reported), but the micro graft is truly diminutive and holds only three or four hair roots, depending upon the finesse and skill of the surgeon doing the work.
